Directions: The number may connect you to a menu or operator. Ask (or dial) for your legislator’s office. You’ll likely be connected to a staff member or voicemail and that’s fine. Parts in bold are the most important. Feel free to ad-lib as you are comfortable. Freaked out about making the call? Hello, my name is _______ and I live at [address] _____________ so I’m a constituent of [representative] _____________. I want to thank [“you” or Rep’s name if speaking with aid] for your extraordinary leadership during this pandemic. I’m calling because I want to make sure that an equally urgent crisis, climate justice, also gets addressed this legislative session.
Feel free to share at this point why climate change is important to you: I’m concerned about... ________ [an experience or worry you’ve had about climate change; especially, effects--pollution, heat, asthma, flooding--where you live or concerns about you/your family’s future]).
I want Representative/Senator _____________ to address the climate crisis by supporting 2 critical pieces of legislation. Specifically, I want him/her to call Tom Golden, as Representative Golden is Chair of the committee where these bills are STUCK, and ask him to vote the 2 climate bills forward from his committee on July 22! These bills are:
- Bill H.2836, which establishes strict emissions limits that get us to 100% Renewable energy by 2045
- H.2810, which levies strong, specific corporate polluter fees to equitably fund a just transition to a green economy, and
Lastly, we cannot have climate justice without racial justice. Please also ask Representative/Senator _____________ to address the climate crisis by supporting 2 critical pieces of legislation:
- Bill HD.5128/SD.2868, an Act Relative to saving black lives and public safety
- H.4264/S.453/S.464, which provide legal definitions that will allow us to protect communities from environmental racism and classism.
Thank you for treating these issues with as much urgency as the COVID-19 crisis. Stay healthy!
